Chair of ETSI NFV ISG, Co-chair of IRTF's NFVRG, Senior Technology Expert, Telefonica I+D

Since October 2011 Diego R. Lopez is in charge of Technology Exploration at the Global CTO Unit, within Telefónica I+D. His responsibilities are related to the definition and coordination of research projects in the areas of new networking technologies and network infrastructures. He is directly involved in activities related to network virtualization, core optimization, AAA, traffic analysis, and infrastructure security.   He is actively participating in the ETSI ISG on Network Function Virtualisation (NFV), chairing its Technical Steering Committee. He is acting as representative of Telefónica in bodies related to network technologies, like the ONF and the BBF, and contributing to several working groups inside IETF.Diego have been appointed by the European Commission as member of the High Level Expert Group on Scientific Data e-Infrastructures (HLEG-SDI).   He received his MS from the University of Granada in 1985, and his PhD degree from the University of Seville in 2001. Since 1985 he have worked for several private and public organisations, developing and deploying communication services.   From 2000 to 2011 he was responsible for the Middleware Area of RedIRIS, the Spanish National Research and Educational Network. As part of these tasks he actively participate in national and international working groups and projects, and he have collaborated in several versions of the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group White Paper, under the auspices of the EU Presidency, in areas related to security and digital identity services.   His current areas of interest are network middleware and network intelligence, virtualization of network architectures, control and signaling protocols, infrastructural and mediation service, and new network architectures and services  Specialities: NFV and Software Networks. Vijoy Pandey, Head of Engineering for Data Center Fabrics & Inter Data Center Backbone Networks, Google

Vijoy Pandey is Head of Engineering for data center fabrics and backbone at Google. He leads the team responsible for the architecture, design, planning and engineering of Google’s data center, cloud and backbone networks with a push towards building large scale distributed systems for automation, diagnostic telemetry and health data analytics.   Prior to Google, he was the CTO of Networking in IBM Cloud, the CTO and Director of Engineering at a startup, Blade Networking Technologies (BNT), and has held various leadership and management roles in switching, security, and application delivery controller companies & startups. Vijoy holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis.

Andrew G. Malis,
Distinguished Engineer, Huawei Technologies

Andrew G. Malis is a Distinguished Engineer at Huawei Technologies. He specializes in product and network architecture and future evolution; standards leadership (internal and external to the company); customer consultation; and SDN, NFV, IP, MPLS, Ethernet, and other telecom and data networking protocols. Previously, he has held senior engineering positions at Verizon, Tellabs, Cascade Communications, BBN, and other industry-leading organizations.   He also holds standards leadership positions as Services Area Director and Technical Council Member at the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and as a Working Group co-chair and a member of the Routing Directorate in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). He has held leadership roles in other standards organizations, including board memberships and president/chairman.   He has written and contributed to many technology standards, including having authored a number of IETF RFCs, and has spoken and chaired at numerous industry conferences.

Sunil Khandekar,
Founder & CEO, Nuage Networks

Sunil leads the vision and direction at Nuage Networks, a Silicon Valley-based business that brings a combination of technologies and networking expertise to the enterprise and telecommunications industries.   He has built 15+ years of expertise in product management and consulting engineering in leadership roles working with the IP Division of former Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) and networking start-up TiMetra Networks, as well as Bay and Nortel Networks in New York and Santa Clara, California. His first professional job came before even earning his degree when he was able to convince a local company in his hometown to hire him as a design engineer during a university-wide strike.   Sunil believes that the key to successful leadership is having the ability to define your vision and inspire people to follow it. Nuage Networks’ success so far is due to hiring top talent and building a team of dedicated players focused on bringing new thinking to industry problems.  A co-author and contributor to multiple IETF drafts, he is also a regular speaker at industry events and conferences. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in CIS.

Jonathan Davidson,
Sr. Vice President, General Manager Service Provider Networking, Cisco

Jonathan rejoined Cisco in March 2017 as Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Service Provider Networking. As part of the Service Provider Business group, he leads the SP Networking organization in driving Cisco’s leadership position in SP routing, networking and automation software solutions while ushering in the next-generation of networking and network automation innovation.   Prior to rejoining Cisco, Jonathan served as Executive Vice President and General Manager at Juniper Networks leading their Engineering and Product Management. In that role, he was responsible for driving strategy, development and business growth for the company’s entire portfolio including routing switching and security, as well as the ongoing evolution of silicon technology and the Junos operation system. Before Juniper, Jonathan held a variety of leadership positions at Cisco over the course of 15 years. During that time, he developed service provider solutions and led the enterprise routing product management team and service provider Layer 4 through Layer 7 services team.   Jonathan co-authored the best-selling book “Voice-over IP Fundamentals” and is a frequent speaker at leading industry events. Active on social media, he frequently shares his observations and insights about the industry through Twitter @jonathandavidsn and blogs.

Jimmy Ehrbar,

Jimmy Ehrbar joined Colt in 2001 where he firsts had various roles in Network Engineering and then contributed to the development of the IMS VoIP platform and services. In 2009 he joined the Architecture and Innovation team which focused on Colt’s long-term network strategy and architecture.  Since 2016 he’s leading this team which is now part of Colt’s On-Demand organisation looking after the NFV and SDN strategy and development. Carsten Rossenhövel is Managing Director and co-founder of EANTC AG (European Advanced Networking Test Center). Based in Berlin, Germany, EANTC is a test lab specializing in telecommunication technologies and offers vendor-neutral network testing services for manufacturers, service providers, and enterprise customers.   In this role Carsten has over 20 years of experience in telecommunication networks testing and is responsible for EANTC's business development and marketing. His technical areas of expertise include Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and transport network solutions (MPLS; SDN; Carrier Ethernet).   Before joining EANTC, he studied Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin and worked as a Software Engineer as well as Consultant in the financial services and media sector. Kirill Kasavchenko is Principal Security Technologist in the Office of the CTO in Netscout Arbor. Kirill has 14 years of experience in various post- and presales roles dealing with telecom operators and large enterprises in more than 30 countries of Europe, Middle East, Russia and CIS. His areas of interest are network design and network security at a large scale.  On the CTO team at Netscout Arbor, Kirill focuses on emerging technologies and global research projects, applying his expertise in routing and protocol analysis to find new ways for Arbor Networks to protect customers’ networks.   Kirill holds B.S. and M.S. with honors in Computer Sciences from the Saint-Petersburg University of IT, Mechanics and Optics as well as a number of industry certifications including Cisco CCIE. Prior to joining Arbor in 2011 he spent seven years on different positions ranging from network technician to chief engineer at systems integrators and network infrastructure vendors.

ABCDE: the NFV Alphabet
Before NFV we knew exactly where network hardware was situated, but it was costly to move it around and develop new capabilities.
Softwarization addressed this, but its implementation as centralized NFV has its own disadvantages, including degraded performance and security.
Like other NFV flavors, ENFV may suffer from higher CAPEX, increased energy footprint, and blurring of the relationship between QoS and QoE.

Yaakov Stein,
Chief Technology Officer, RAD

Yaakov (Jonathan) Stein obtained his BSc (1977), MSc (1979) and PhD (1989) degrees in theoretical physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.   From 1980 to 1989 Dr. Stein worked as a research scientist for the Israel Ministry of Defense, and received the Israel Defense Award, Israel's highest award for defense-related research. He was employed by Comverse Technology from 1989 to 1998, first as Neural Network Applications Team Leader in Tel Aviv, and then as DSP and Advanced Technology Manager, stationed in New York. Between 1995 and 1998 he served as Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Polytechnic University, New York and has served in a similar capacity at Tel Aviv University since 1998.   In 1999 he was named Chief Scientist at RAD and became the company’s Chief Technology Officer in 2011.   Dr. Stein has authored numerous academic papers, standardization contributions and patent applications. He has chaired and given invited lectures at international conferences and is an active participant in several telecommunication industry standardization forums. He has coauthored and contributed many IETF RFCs, ITU-T Recommendations and MPLS Forum (now Broadband Forum) Implementation Agreements. He presently co-chairs the IETF’s Timing over IP Connection and Transfer of Clock (TICTOC) working group. His book, Digital Signal Processing - A Computer Science Perspective, was published by John Wiley and Sons in 2000.

Brian has created a number of industry initiatives ranging from founding ETSI’s Mobile Edge Compute working group, founding the Product and Service Assembly Initiative (BT, C&W, Colt, QinetQ, Oracle, Microsoft) and leading OSS through Java Initiative.  Brian joined IBM as an Executive in their Telco Mega Deals team and most recently held responsibility as the Head of IBM’s Telco Software Business. SDN must translate to faster and better customer services. To realize that vision, the concept of intent must be extended to perceive customer services as high-level intent. At the same time, low-level network programming must be driven by this high-level intent, leading to the concept of hierarchy of intents so that even network engineering-related problems are mapped to customer services.

Łukasz Mendyk is currently responsible for OSS product management at Comarch. He specializes in solutions based on the concept of catalog-driven fulfillment, as well as on innovative concepts such as Self-Organizing Networks, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV).   During his 19 years of professional experience in the IT and telecom industries, he was involved in developing OSS solutions for 15 years.   He obtained his Master of Science degree from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, in the field of computer science.   Łukasz is an enthusiast of TMF standards and best practices, which proved useful during his career when helping to develop OSS products that add value to a telecom business.

Ali earned his PhD from Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Toronto in 2009.  Before pursuing his PhD Ali has been working for over 10 years in Telecom Industry and he led the design and architecture of an award-winning homegrown Digital Local Exchange in Middle East during 90’s.  Ali is currently leading a TELUS initiative to build an intent-based open platform to enable composing use-cases and services in a model-driven environment.
