Rolling out Voice Services over LTE

2013 will be the commercial roll-out year for VoLTE. Based on their experiences acquired through multiple field trials, the carriers will start their offering next year with the hope that VoLTE will be the LTE killer application.

The second edition of the VoLTE conference will take place in Paris-Roissy from 10/12 October, 2012. The success of the first edition proved that VoLTE is definitely the application that will insure the success of the next coming LTE services.

There is indeed no doubt that VoLTE has received much attention over the last few years because of its promise to deliver “carrier grade” voice services over a packet-switched network.  Service providers are counting on VoLTE to deliver this level of service and differentiate their voice services from Internet-enabled third-party VoIP services.

However, providing “carrier grade” voice service requires the successful implementation and deployment of features within all elements of the end-to-end network.

The Role of IMS

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has been chosen as the singular global architecture for voice and multimedia communication services for LTE. However, IMS is not new technology and has been the focus of service provider efforts since the middle part of last decade. The reality is that IMS has not been as widely or deeply adopted as experts predicted 5–6 years ago. The reason is cost and complexity.
Given the years of fits and starts with IMS, service providers are demanding a new approach that reduces the architectural complexity, streamlines and accelerates deployments. Service providers want an IMS solution that adheres to standards, while facilitating a multi-vendor, best-of-breed technology, including an easy scalability to support mass-market subscriber quantities, an extensive range of communications services and a lower total cost of ownership.

What are the necessary steps required to prepare a network for a commercial launch of VoLTE services?
What are the requirements of future VoLTE/IMS?
Which fixed-line services are easy to migrate to VoLTE?
What are the voice features for the near future?
Which video services?

Responses will be given during the VoLTE Conference to be held in Hotel Novotel Paris Roissy CDG from 10 to 12 October 2012.
