The Lecturer

Andre DANTHINE, Professor at the University of Liège since 1967, created a Research Unit in Networking (RUN) in 1972, and decided to direct his research to the problems related to computer networks and established links with researchers of ARPANET and CYCLADES networks. He focused his works on network architecture and the protocol theory.

His group conducted research and development projects
- with the Société Générale de Banque between 1974 and 1980 for a network with 1200 branch processors deployed in 1982 ;
- with EDF-GDF between 1976 and 1978 for the specification and validation of transport protocol of RETINA ;
- with Bell Telephone (Alcatel Bell) between 1979 and 1981 for the verification of internal protocols for the X25 network developed by Bell Telephone for the Dutch Telecom.

In 1978, he organized, the first world conference on "Computer Networks Protocols" in Liège, which was attended by 480 participants.

In 1983, Professor Danthine launched the ESPRIT I Project 73 aimed at the development of a high-speed network for the interconnection of heterogeneous LANs on a broad site. This Project concluded in 1989, with installation on the Sart Tilman Campus of the University of Liege, of the BWN (Backbone Wideband Network) prototype (more than 18 km of optical fibre with a data rate of 140 Mbps). He has also been involved in the ESPRIT Projects PANGLOSS and APHRODITE.

In 1990, Professor Danthine launched OSI95 to tackle the design of a new transport service and protocol for multimedia applications in a high-speed environment. He has also been involved in the RACE Projects CIO using the European ATM pilot through an access at 34 Mbit/sec, in ACCOPI and in the ACTS project OKAPI.

From 1992 to 1998, Professor Danthine was the chairman of the COST action 237 on "Multimedia Telecommunication Services".

Since October 1997, he has been Professor Emeritus at the University of Liege. He has presented many one-day tutorials on the integration of IP over ATM and on MPLS at ECMAST 97 in Milan, ICCC97 in Cannes, Asia Pacific Communication Conference 97 in Sydney, ECMAST 99 in Madrid, CLEI 99 in Asuncion, SADIO 99 in Buenos-Aires, SoftCom 99 in Split, SmartNet 99 in Bangkok and ICNP 2001 in Riverside.

Since 2000, he presented his in-depth public tutorials on MPLS and the new IP architecture in Paris, London and Brussels. Seminars on the same subjects have also been presented on-site at Sprint in Burlingame (USA), ONI in Portugal, Sophia Antipolis Foundation in Nice, Alcatel in Antwerp and Mobistar in Brussels, M.E.T. in Namur, France Telecom in Paris, C.E.C. and EPT-LUX in Luxemburg, B-Telecom, Easynet, Syntigo and C.E.C in Brussels and OTN Systems in Herenthals (Be).

Professor Danthine is a member of ACM and a life member of IEEE; he is the editor of several books and proceedings and the author of more than a hundred papers.

Chairman of the TC6 of IFIP from 1979 to 1985, he has been Governor of ICCC since 1982. CRB Fellow in 1960, he received the Melchior Salier Prize in 1961, the "Bell Telephone-100th Anniversary" prize in 1983 and the IFIP Silver Core in 1986. In 1993-1994, he was Francqui Professor at the VUB.

He is Doctor of Science Honoris Causa of the University of Kent, U.K. (1991), and of the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, Fr. (1996).
He received the 2000 ACM SIGCOMM Award "for basic contributions to protocol design and modeling and for leadership in the development of computer networking in Europe". He is a founding member of the Technical Committee of the MPLS World Congress organized in Paris the second week of February since 1999. This conference was the first one dedicated to MPLS and is still the most important international event organized on this subject.
